On half marathons

I’m telling you, I don’t know what I got myself into. I ran 3 miles today and I was pushing myself every step of the way. Does it get easier? How will I make it to 13.1 by May 6?

On cable

We’re trying to find an alternative to cable at least for the first few months while we get used to the new (more expensive) bills of our new place.I’ve considered Amazon Prime and Hulu, both seem like good options. I like Amazon Prime, but it doesn’t have Real Housewives of Orange County. Is this a bad reason not to get it? I love my trashy tv!Any alternatives we should seek out?

On being a girl

I am SO excited to watch The Vow, but kind of bummed that Eric and I won’t be able to see if for a while. We’re too busy this weekend with packing, and next weekend we’re moving. But seriously, I love me some Channing and I adore Rachel McAdams.

Your regional community selection will have videos. That was always our inexpensive entry to amusement (back in the VHS times that is)

I’ve nixed cable when I’ve lived alone to save money. I watched a lot of shows online but you’re right the trashy reality stuff isn’t on there! I missed it…and The Vow was SO SO SO good…I cried and I love Channing Tatum, he is sooooo good looking.

That picture needs to come off! It is way too hot! I can’t even focus on my work anymore.
I want to see The Vow just because of Channing. Such an eye candy for married women. lol

Your local public library will have dvds. That was always our cheap access to entertainment (back in the VHS days that is)

Also books!

I went without cable for about 4 years and just got it when the fiance and I moved in together. I did Netflix back when it was cheap-ish, so I started with 4 DVDs out at a time and considered that my “entertainment”. It worked for awhile until their prices started rising, but even now with their online option, there’s an OK amount of stuff and you can get DVDs of whatever isn’t online. However, I think if I were doing it now, I’d probably investigate Hulu+ instead — seemed like a better variety of content online.

My big splurge this weekend was The Vow…and it was totally worth it! Sooo much better than the reviews said it would be. πŸ™‚

I only watch TV online – no cable, got rid of Netflix when they doubled the price, and no free TV over the air where I live. But I still get my fill of trashy reality shows online. πŸ™‚ Not all of them, for sure, but enough to keep me satisfied.

You are braver than me with the half-marathon! In college, I used to run 4-5 miles a day. It NEVER got easier. Ultimately, I just switched to a form of exercise that was easier on my body. Now, I doubt if I could run even a single mile without dying!

Honestly, I think it’s worth it to keep paying for TV in order to watch Real Housewives… it’s my closet addiction and I couldn’t live without it! πŸ™‚ Seriously though, we also have Netflix, and although they don’t have a great selection of movies available for streaming, they really do have a nice selection of TV shows, so I could see making the switch at some point to save money.

As for Netflix, I have it (disc and streaming through Xbox, although I could never get it to stream right, slow internet). I plan on cancelling all or part of my service. I use to be a major advocate of them and in the last year or so the quality seems to have gone down but the price has gone up. I guess not that pricey in comparision to Cable though. As well I have a close connection that works for them and the feedback is they do not seem to be employee friendly. Too bad, I really use to love Netflix, guess the economy and competition.

Channing is hawt!

Hey, if I can walk 13.1 miles with absolutely no training, I know you can do this. You may not be able to run the entire thing, but look into the gallaway method and ways to incorporate a walk/run. You’ll do great. I know it!

We have netflix and digital bunny ears. We get all the basic channels for free!

It will get easier, I promise. Are you following a certain schedule to gradually increase the miles? I think something like what I am doing will help too. Two regular runs (aiming to get to 5-6 for your ‘staple’ mileage), one speed/interval and one long. So you condition yourself for distance, up your ‘staple’ mileage gradually and your lungs for speed and different inclines. You can dooo it!

1. the running gets easier. by the time you end your training and 3 miles is your “short” run, you’ll be laughing at your former self. (except for when you get back out of shape and can’t run 3 miles…. πŸ˜‰ )
2. i LOVE me some trashy TV…..but i haven’t had cable in over a year and while i miss it sometimes….i don’t miss it $45 worth πŸ˜‰

We use Netflix (Instant and discs) as a cable alternative. We haven’t had cable since May and it’s SO nice!

I have hulu and netflx and we love it! Although Netflix doesnt have the most current movies, so we are thinking about getting rid of it!

Megg February 10, 2012 - 6:58 pm

We use Netflix too, but just wait because there aren’t any movies we NEED to see that we don’t see in the theater. But that’s just us!

Training for the half marathon will get easier. Once you get up in the higher miles, you will actually catch yourself saying..oh yeah I’m ONLY running 10 miles today. It’s the weirdest thing when those words come out of your mouth! LOL. Good luck on your training!

And I have found that hulu seems to work well enough for me. We don’t even pay for hulu plus and I have managed. I forget to even turn on my cable tv. We also pay for netflix which is only $8/month. I think between hulu and netflix we would do okay without cable.

Running does get easier! Once you’re past the five mile mark, I really think you have a mental and physical breakthrough and realize, “Hey, I can do this!”

I’ve run a total of 8 half-marathons and a full marathon. When I’m trying to increase my miles, I often listen to podcasts or music to distract me. On long runs, I’ll often do an out and back: by the time I’ve run three miles from home, I have no choice but to turn around and run three miles back.

You might also want to check out local running groups – they can be a great source of encouragement as you gear up for your first big race! Also, invest in a foam roller and/or a stick. Your legs will thank you. πŸ™‚
