Planning Your NYC Engagement Photos

With so many scenic locations, it’s well worth taking some engagement photos as a special memento. If you’re considering heading to New York City with your fiance, you’ll find yourself spoilt for choice: there’s a huge range of places to pop the question in, whatever your preferred aesthetic.

Untermyer Gardens Conservatory

Thoughts of New York City might not immediately turn to the natural world, but there’s a surprising number of pretty green spaces to be found, like the Untermyer Gardens Conservatory overlooking the Hudson River, originally dubbed “the finest garden in the world” by its creators.

Bethesda Terrace Arcade

If you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, Bethesda Terrace Arcade (also called the Bethesda Arches) offers stunning 19th Century architecture just outside of Central Park, where you can take in a romantic stroll beforehand, or even take your photoshoot onto a lake for a few romantic rowboat pictures.

The West Village

Fewer places in NYC are more romantic than the West Village. With its distinctive brownstones and tree-lined street, it’s evocative of so many scenes in movie and TV history, so why not set the scene for your engagement photo here?

SoHo

The most obvious choice for art-loving couples might be to head to MoMa, and that’s certainly a good option, but SoHo offers a vibrant backdrop for your engagement photographs, complete with wall upon wall of graffiti and gorgeous murals.

Coney Island

Keep things bright and breezy down at the Coney Island boardwalk, where alongside the fun of the fair at the amusement arcades you’ll find plenty of colorful locations to pose in, as well as some beautiful seaside spots along the beach.

Flatiron District

The Flatiron District with its distinctive buildings and yellow cabs is quintessentially New York, and photographs beautifully, especially in springtime, when the blossom adds a burst of color to the urban surroundings. Have fun with your city photo shoot before heading to the original Shake Shake for a bite to eat.

Belvedere Castle

For a fairytale feel to your engagement photoshoot, head to Belvedere Castle, an octagonal castle located on a small island at the second highest natural point of Central Park, where you can be sure to get some wonderful views.

The Statue of Liberty

We couldn’t go without mentioning the home of New York City’s very own guardian. One of the best vantage points is Liberty State Park. While this is technically in New Jersey, it offers some of the best views of the Statue of Liberty amid a charming park setting with beautiful views of the Manhattan skyline.

Tips Before You Go

Many places will require you to have a permit before shooting any photography there, so check in with the website of the venue or location before you leave to see whether you’ll need one.

In addition, remember that some places will get very busy. Depending on where you go, it is possible to find a few quiet spots, but if neither of you mind the crowds, the world’s your oyster.
